Today we prayed for those who are going back to school. May God always be with them and give them strength and wisdom.
One of the most unattractive qualities about human nature is when people take on a mindset of entitlement. Entitlement says I deserve to do this because I'm unique special or because I've been allowed to do it without accountability for years. It is my observation that unless we guard against it, people who are allowed to repeat a behavior uninterrupted and unresisted for a short period of time, can soon take ownership and entitlement sets in. That is human nature. By way of illustration I list these day to day examples. A convenient parking space Equipment at a health club A fishing hole A seat in the living room The same table at a restaurant Unwittingly people can allow these same entitlement attitudes to slip into their local church. It has been my observation for years that often church membership costs less then a Sam's club membership. I pay a fee and therefore I am entitled to..... The unchurched and the unsaved did not get the memo that you are entitled to anything. That don't know, nor do they care about your turf wars. Entitlement was an attitude that often reared its ugly head among the disciples. Jesus was always quick to address such a mindset. His continuous message was one that communicated service. You are privileged to serve the king. Such service in this world will entitle you to such great things as persecution, misunderstanding, loss, and alienation. Check your heart; do you operate with entitlement, or privilege. Pastor John Reed
Note from Pastor John Reed My wife and I have had the opportunity to move her parents into our home to live with us for their remaining days. Because my home was inaccessible by wheelchair I built a ramp and deck on the back of my home to facilitate access . One of the unforeseen drawbacks to building this ramp was the loss of space in my back yard for my dog to do what dogs do. Scoping out other opportunities my dog began to share her built-in fertilizer blessings with my next door neighbor. He seemed unappreciative of these little gifts and expressed his displeasure to my wife. It quickly moved away from my conscious thought process until I found a collection of my dogs droppings unceremoniously dumped behind my father in laws minivan. My response was less then the biblical minimum standard. Truthfully I was devising ways to use a slingshot or pneumatic air gun to return these little droppings. My wife suggested a far more peaceful solution, building a fence. As I began working on this project I soon discovered that their backyard was a landmine of my dogs memorabilia. I went through three pair of shoes stepping in the stuff my neighbor had complained about. As you can imagine it was quite humbling to spend just a few minutes in my neighbors dog poop laden shoes. You may be wondering what this has to do with the value of the month service. Service can only grow out of a heart of gratitude and compassion. During these times of incredible unrest around the world I have been very disappointed in the response that many have expressed towards those people groups that they lump in with a small minority of violent people. I wonder what might happen if we spent a day or two in the shoes of the refugees from any nation forced by violence to flee for their lives. Nowhere in the Bible do I see Jesus command us to go and be as safe as possible I do not find a commandment to insulate yourself from all danger. I do find repeated commands to go to the world with the gospel. I do not want to take an overly simplistic view of a very complex problem but it does seem to me that if the world is coming to us it makes the job of world evangelism much easier. There is not a heart in the world no matter how hard that will not respond to love demonstrated by a heart of service. It is all too easy in our comfortable culture to lose sight of the marching orders that our commander in chief left us with. I hope you will understand I am NOT a politician and I have no interest in many of the fights that they choose to engage in, I am however very clear on what the Bible teaches me about my very purpose on this earth. As we consider the value of serving this month it might do us well to spend a little time walking where someone else has already had to walk.
